Dr. Eugene Kalman Genga is a respected lecturer in the Department of Clinical Medicine and Therapeutics at the University of Nairobi’s School of Medicine. His journey in medicine began at the University of Nairobi, where he earned his medical degree and completed his residency in internal medicine. Driven by a passion for specialization, Dr. Genga pursued advanced training in rheumatology at Aintree University Hospital in Liverpool, under the mentorship of Prof. Robert Moots, and at Sancheti Orthopaedic Hospital in Pune, India, guided by Prof. Avrin Chopra and Dr. Nalawade. He further distinguished himself by completing the two-year European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) course, culminating in the successful passing of the exit exam.
Dr. Genga is not only a scholar but also a proud alumnus of Nairobi School, where he embraced the school’s ethos of service, hard work, and holistic development. His dedication to the “student-athlete” ideal has significantly shaped both his professional life and personal character. An accomplished basketball player, Dr. Genga’s career highlights include representing Kenya on the national team in 2007 and 2011, as well as contributing to COOP Bank’s triumphs in the East Africa Club Championships and the Kenya Premier League between 2009 and 2013.
As captain of the University of Nairobi’s “Terrorists” team, he led them to a top-four finish in the Kenya Premier Basketball League during his final year of medical school.
Today, Dr. Genga seamlessly blends his love for medicine with his passion for sports. As a practicing physician and rheumatologist in Nairobi, he continues to make strides in his field, with a focus on lupus, inflammatory muscle disease, and interstitial lung diseases. His research is well-regarded, with numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Beyond his clinical and academic roles, Dr. Genga is dedicated to nurturing future leaders. He runs a “student-athlete programme” for Nairobi School and University of Nairobi basketball teams, emphasizing the importance of balancing academics with athletic excellence.
Dr. Genga is also actively involved in the medical community as the organizing secretary of the Arthrheuma Society of Kenya and serves as the treasurer of the UWEZO Foundation, reflecting his commitment to advancing rheumatology and giving back to society.
